For many dogs, reaching a shelter can be an overwhelming and deep trauma experience. Sudden changes in their environment surrounded by unfamiliar sights, noise and odor are often distracted and afraid of them. The protection of their previous life – it is the hardest prediction of any home or even roads – suddenly gone. This rise can retreat the dog into them, suppressing their natural personality as a defense system. Fear, anxiety and stress can prioritize their behavior, trying to help them makes it difficult to believe or bond with people.
In Washington County Johnson City Animal Shelter, the staff directly witnessed this heartbreaking reality with Rosco, one of their reserved residents.
A brown-white mixed variety Rosco reached the shelter in unusual situations. He spent most of his life as straying, survived the streets and relied on his wise to find food and stay safely. Life on the street taught him to be careful from people; To him, people had just a way to fill his empty stomach.
When Rosco was finally brought to the shelter after reporting as a stray, it was clear that he had endured significant suffering. However, what the shelter staff stood most was not just his physical condition – it lacked its full emotion.
“He was very brave and preserved,” recalled Davis, one of the shelters’ staff. “It seemed that he had no personality at all. He was not acting like a dog – there was no rusty tail, there was no spark in the eyes, nothing was. He barely exists. “
For weeks, shelter workers made our best to connect Rosco. They spoke gently to him, offered him to behave, and spent hours sitting with him to make confidence. Yet Rosco remained isolated. He refused to be comforted, turned away from the touch of people and showed no interest in love or playing.
Davis said, “It was heartbreaking to see him like this.” “Whatever we do, we could not approach him. He did not respond to people or even other dogs. He is only in his own little world. “
The staff knew that Rosco had a long road in front of him. They believed that he could never be fully open to anyone. However, they were not ready to leave him.
As the shelter worked tirelessly to take care of Rosco, they decided to try something else. The shelter with the challenges by Covid -19 has begun to rely a lot on social media to display its animals and connect potential accepters. They understood why not give Rosco a chance – even if he is not the most outgoing or acceptable dog?
Davis explained, “We all took so much care about him.” “We thought, ‘Let’s just be honest about who he is. Perhaps someone there will see his fights and give him a chance. ‘
In a sincere post, the shelter shared the story of Rosco. They described his hard life on the street, his preserved behavior and their hope that anyone could help him get out of his shell.
The post has acquired traction, many people have expressed sympathy for Rosco’s plight. However, no one has expected the message that will change everything.
After the post was too live, the shelter received an amazing response. A man commented on the post, claiming that Rosco was his dog – a dog that he lost three years ago.
Shelter staff was suspicious at first. First of all, it was not unusual to believe people mistakenly that any shelter dogs had them. But then the man provided the proof: a small rosecoe picture, complete with the same distinct marks that distinguish him.
The man explained that Rosco disappeared a few years ago and despite the best effort to find him, he had taken the worst one. When he saw the shelter’s post, he couldn’t trust his eyes.
The shelter arranged to meet the man and the staff members waited with concern to see if Rosco could recognize him.
When the man arrived, the transition to Rosco was immediate. The dog that was emotionally withdrawn and withdrawn for months suddenly shines in excitement. His tail was fierce – no one in the shelter has seen before.
“It was incredible to see him coming to life in that way,” Davis said. ” “It was like a switch upside down. He ran straight to the man, jumped his tail and said, ‘Where were you?’ “
For the first time in a few months, Rosco’s eyes shine with joy. The man lowered his head, tears on his face as he hugged his long-haired companion. Asylum workers, unable to hold on to their own tears, saw the reunion revealed with a heart full of gratitude.
As soon as Rosco left the shelter with his owner, the staff could not feel the mix of emotions but could not help. They were delighted to see him very happy, but they were so bitsuit to say goodbye to a dog that had made so much care and effort.
“That’s why we do what we do,” Davis said. “Seeing a dog like Roseco is a pleasant, tail-shaped reunion to stop completely-it’s worth every hard day”. “
