Luna’s journey of faith and freedom began with fear and uncertainty. When he first arrived in his new home after years in a shelter in northern Macedonia, he was terrified and withdrawn. Rescuers have never encountered a dog as fearsome as Luna. At the age of six, Luna spent more than three years in a shelter with 80 other dogs, struggling to survive after being neglected and forced to eat rocks to stave off hunger. He was finally given a chance at a better life, and his progress was remarkable.
When Luna was first brought home, she had to be carried home because she was too scared to walk. She freezes in fear at every new sight and sound, resisting even attempts to take her inside. Her rescuer, patient and gentle, took everything in her stride, sitting with her to build trust. Gradually, he began to explore his new environment. He drank water, sniffed for food and took food carefully, though he was cautious about physical affection.
As Luna adjusted, her rescuers introduced her to their other dogs. First, she met Cobb, a calm and gentle dog who instinctively gave her space. Then she met Moi, their energetic ‘mini horse’ of a dog. Although overwhelmed at times, Luna begins to relax around them, even showing an interest in the puppies, Bunny and Olive. Her rescuers kept interactions brief and positive, making sure she didn’t feel trapped or stressed.
One of Luna’s biggest challenges was separation anxiety. When left alone, he cried and cried, unsure if his new family would return. His rescuers implemented a training plan, starting with short absences and gradually increasing the time they spent. Luna’s progress was encouraging, and soon, she was sober despite being alone for long periods of time.
Another obstacle was Luna’s fear of leashes, possibly stemming from past trauma. His rescuers work patiently to build positive relationships with Leash, allowing him to adjust at his own pace. After a few weeks of small steps, Luna was ready to take her first walk in years. At first hesitation, he quickly began to relax, curiously exploring the outside world. His confidence grew with each walk, especially when accompanied by his canine companions.

Luna’s transformation was nothing short of inspiring. From a dog afraid to trust, to enjoying walks and bonding with his new family, he proves that patience, love and a little kindness can change a life. Luna’s rescuers continue to celebrate her progress and look forward to many adventures ahead. He is finally living the life he deserves – a life filled with security, love and hope.
