When a little puppy named Chowder arrived at the Riverside County Department of Animal Services in California, his innocent face behind the cold metal bars left everyone heartbroken. Just seven weeks old, Chowder was brought in as a stray and placed in a large kennel surrounded by large, barking dogs. The contrast of her small, fragile personality against the surroundings was unbearable for the shelter staff and volunteers. The sight of him sitting confused and scared quickly caught the attention of animal lovers everywhere.
Chowder, a cream and tan Lab mix, was considered “rescue only” because of his young age—puppies are typically considered ready for adoption at 8 to 10 weeks old, and Chowder was a week shy of that mark. Her situation was made more urgent by a case of giardia, an intestinal infection, which shelter staff immediately began treating. Despite his difficult situation, the little pup’s resilience shines through, and the compassionate team does their best to make his stay comfortable.
A heartbreaking video of Chowder recorded by @savingriversideshelterdogs was shared on Instagram and quickly went viral. The video shows a small puppy being held in a kennel meant for much larger dogs, surrounded by rows of metal bars.
“Just a little kid, in a big kennel, surrounded by a kennel of big dogs,” the agency captioned the post. The emotional footage touched the hearts of thousands, with comments filled with concern and hope for Chowder’s future.
People were horrified that he was kept inside a large kennel without bed, toys and comfort. One commenter wrote, “Not even a blanket and a small toy???” added another. “Oh, that sweet little puppy. How did this cute little puppy end up in a shelter?” Another commented, “Awww sweet lil baby, you must be so scared and lonely. I pray you get your miracle and find a safe and loving home.” The outpouring of love and support is a testament to how deeply Chowder’s story resonated with people.
Thanks, that was a happy update to share. The rescue agency announced that Chowder had been taken in on a “celebrated first date,” raising hopes that his foster family could become his forever home. “We hope the feather will accept!” Read the update.
