Trump’s move has created a lot of tension among the far-right in the United States. They have also been hailed as a blueprint by far-right lawmakers, extremist influencers, and white supremacist group devotees around the world. And those individuals and organizations now believe that Trump’s actions should not just be copied, but taken to the next level.
“This is more than just a political success,” Martin Sellner, far-right activist and leader of Austria’s Identitarian Movement, wrote on his Telegram channel. “This is a metapolitical victory: the end of awakening and trans ideologies, the cessation of illegal immigration and many other ideas have been normalized in society.”
“These extremists think this is the way to go, their countries should learn from what Trump is proposing, and they shouldn’t be weak about it, and they shouldn’t let vigilante activists get their way, because everyone knows that the right thing to do is Getting rid of immigrants,” Wendy Via, CEO of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, told Wired.
Selner, who once Christchurch massacre gunman contactedBest known for popularizing the white nationalist concept of “immigration”, the idea of ethnically cleansing Western countries of all non-white citizens. That extremist ideology has gained traction among other far-right groups in Europe, including Option for Germany (AfD) and the Freedom Party of Austria. Now, Sellner believes Trump’s return to the Oval Office signals a moment to take his agenda mainstream.
“Pushing further into the realm of the ‘unspeakable,’ we’ve moved off the defensive and truly moved the Overton window to the right for the first time,” Selner wrote. “Even if you think Trumpism has gone far enough, you should support the radical side.”
Selner is not alone in Europe. Across the continent, far-right figures praised Trump’s actions on immigration and gender and called on their own countries’ leaders to follow suit.
In France, the Generation Identity group, the youth wing of the far-right Identitarian movement, wrote in a telegram: “Emigration in full. Identitarianism has won ideologically, it will take time for this victory to be reflected in the material world.”
In Ireland, Keith Woods, the far-right influential and Allies of US white supremacist Nick Fuentesshared a clip of Kasturi’s Nazi-like salute with the caption: “Okay maybe woke really died.” Irish UFC fighter Conor McGregor, who has associated himself with Ireland’s far-right community in recent years, was in the Capitol for the opening and met Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. McGregor praised Trump’s immigration policies and wrote on Instagram, “Ireland and its human trafficking rackets need to be completely destroyed! It is a violation of our security and sovereignty. For me it’s a national emergency.” (McGregor recently said he was considering running for president in Ireland, a symbolic role with no real power.)
